Have you ever wanted to be your own boss but not felt ready enough to leave your current employer and start an entire business of your own?! Before I eventually went completely on my own I went through various phases of not feeling confident enough to start a venture of my own. That’s when I started researching alternate methods of basically being your own boss, without having to go through the financial risk and came across this term, intrapreneurship.

I learned that it is a fairly new kind of career choice where one can pursue the role of an entrepreneur while still staying employed in someone else’s enterprise. This term was coined in the 1980s by management consultant Gifford Pinchot. How this works is, as an employee one is free to explore ideas and develop them on an individual basis as a subset of the existing enterprise; of course, keeping in mind that only the profitable ideas will be getting a go-ahead for further development.
Intrapreneurship may not be as big a risk as entrepreneurship, but there are certain qualities that every intrapreneur should possess to be able to make the cut successfully! Let’s have a look at some of these desirable qualities:
1.) Determined – Determination is the foundation! One needs to be 100 percent sure that they are ready to take the responsibility and also factor in the possibility of facing many obstacles before they are able to achieve success in their endeavor. An intrapreneur needs to be prepared for being questioned about his or her ideas but keep their head down and do what they have to do!
2.) Passionate – Being passionate about one’s ideas and beliefs is an essential quality that an intrapreneur can really benefit from. To be able to turn an idea into reality with all possible roadblocks and questions coming his or her way, passion is what will help them keep it together and keep it going.
3.) Resourceful – To come across as a person who can hold the weight of being an intrapreneur, one needs to be extremely resourceful along with being passionate and determined! One of the key qualities of an intrapreneur is to manage many resources without shelling out the big bucks and this is what makes them stand out in a crowd from an employer’s point of view.
4.) Courageous – “Eyes on the prize”, is what an intrapreneur essentially needs to focus on; everything else should be a blur and one needs to be courageous to have this attitude. Being able to follow one’s ideas and goals with no fear in mind is an important quality for an intrapreneur to have.
5.) Diplomatic – An intrapreneur’s development and execution of ideas depends on multiple people in an organization and hence they must be very careful about stepping on someone’s toes, or upsetting someone in the process; especially someone who is vital in the decision making.
6.) Adaptable – The role of an intrapreneur requires people to be able to easily adapt to constantly changing situations, to be able to churn out new ideas, and find new profitable avenues with evolving times.
7.) Result-oriented – Focus on the bigger picture! More often than not, an intrapreneur needs to keep the end result in plain sight and work backward for the successful execution of his or her ideas.
